Second Mission to Southern Leyte

AMM sent surgical and medical teams in November to the towns of Sogod and St. Bernard in Southern Leyte, Philippines.  The team continued AMM's relief efforts for the communities affected by a devastating landslide last February.  While in Southern Leyte, the teams performed surgical procedures to patients at the Sogod District Hospital.  There are no surgical facilities in St. Bernard, but AMM ran a medical clinic at the government-sponsored Rural Health Clinic.

Veteran AMM volunteer and Queen's Medical Center surgeon Dr. Bradley Wong led a group of 26 people, consisting of doctors, nurses and lay volunteers.  Dr. Amelia Jacang, a Honolulu pediatrician, ran pediatric clinics in Sogod, St. Bernard, and Isabel for the PASAR Foundation's SPACE Healthy Kid Project.

The volunteers administered 266 surgeries and treated 1,620 pediatric patients.  The general surgeons administered operations that included large thyroids, breast cancer, sarcoma of the leg, and an amputation on a young boy because he had cancer on his bone.  Plastic surgeons fixed a lot of cleft lips and operated on burn victims. A total of 1,372 patients were treated during the five-day visit.
