Clinic News - Winter 2007

FUNDING UPDATE

The Aloha Medical Mission Clinic has been fortunate to receive several grants this season, allowing our clinic to continue serving the people of Hawaii with no health insurance.  HMSA has been a long-time supporter of AMM and has graciously donated $50,000 toward our Honolulu Clinic.  We also received $10,000 from The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. as part of their annual "Sharing the Joys of the Holidays" project.  The dental clinic also accepted a generous grant of $5,000 from Kaiser, which will allow us to improve our services and touch more lives.

In November the Honolulu Clinic was the recipient of an ATL Ultramark 4 Plus ultrasound system used for OB/GYN procedures.  This system was donated to us by Dr. James Lyons, who practices obstetrics and gynecology all over Hawaii.  He has also decided to donate his time once a month to perform ultrasounds for our OB/GYN patients.  Previously, our patients in need of free ultrasound had to travel to Kailua to the office of Dr. Eesha Bhattacharyya who has graciously been donating his time and service to the Aloha Medical Mission.  We would like to send a big mahalo to both Dr. Lyons and Dr. Bhattacharyya for their continued generosity and support.

DENTAL UPDATE

The clinic has developed a new partnership with the University of Hawaii School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.  Through this partnership we have been able to provide free teeth cleanings for the first time in AMMC's history.  Through this program, the dental hygiene students are rotated between different partner sites to get hands on clinical experience.  Their participation has also helped in our ongoing effort to increase clinic hours and better utilize our space.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

In an effort to reach more people, we have participated in multiple community health fairs this season including the Taste of Kalihi, the John A. Burns School of Medicine 3rd Annual Health Fair, and KCC World AIDS Day.  Participation in the Taste of Kalihi was an attempt to spread the word about our free services.  With the help of nursing students from Hawaii Pacific University, we were able to provide free blood pressure checks to those who stopped by to learn about AMMC.

Our presence at JABSOM's 3rd Annual Health Fair allowed us to recruit more volunteers to our cause.  The fair was designed to let current medical students and faculty know what kind of services are out in the community.  KCC World AIDS day allowed us the opportunity recruit both patients and volunteers from the KCC community.
