OVERSEAS MISSIONS

Q.  Is Aloha Medical Mission (AMM) affiliated with any religious denomination or governmental agency?

A.  No.  AMM, as a U.S. tax-exempt organization (NGO), is not affiliated with any religion or government.

Q.  Who can volunteer?

A.  AMM seeks certified medical and dental professionals for its missions abroad and at our Clinic in Hawaii.  Opportunities for lay people, for example, those currently studying medicine or undergoing their residencies, are available at our Honolulu Clinic.

Q. What skills are required?

A. We are in great need of Internal Medicine, Family Care, Pediatricians, General and Plastic Surgeons, Dermatologists, Anesthesiologists, etc.

Q.  What qualifications does AMM require of its volunteers?

A.  All overseas mission volunteers, lay people excepted, must have completed their professional training and have currently valid professional licenses from their country, state, or province.  Medical or dental volunteers at our Clinic in Honolulu must have valid Hawaii licenses.

Q. Do you accept retired medical workers?

A. Yes.  They are ideal candidates for our humanitarian work with their experience and schedule flexibility.  We only require that applicants possess a current medical license.

Q. Who pays for expenses?

A. All expenses, i.e. airfare, hotel accommodations, meals and other travel expenses for oversea medical missions, are the responsibility of the mission volunteer.

Q.  How much does the average overseas mission cost a volunteer?

A.  Over the years, the average has come to $1,500 (U.S.) per trip, including room and board.

Q. How long do missions last?

A. AMM's missions abroad are 10-15 days in length, including travel time.

Q.  Does AMM accept local in-country volunteer medical staff on its overseas missions?

A.  Yes.  We always work together with local doctors and nurses.  It is a good way to share expertise and techniques between the two groups as well as for American and other overseas volunteers to get to know colleagues from the host country.  Sometimes, in fact, we have missions specifically set up as training missions

Q.  Does AMM make travel arrangements, or must the individual volunteers?

A.  AMM uses an official travel agent to arrange flights and accommodations.

Q. How does a mission get started?

A. We initiate medical missions by invitation.  Aloha Medical Mission will assess the need, location, security, and cooperation of the local government, medical community, and other NGO's (non-governmental agencies) before a decision is made.

Q. How do I apply to volunteer?

A. Complete the appropriate application forms on this website pertaining to your occupation - doctor, nurse, or lay person/other.  You must indicate on the form which mission you want to participate in.

Q.  How can I find out about future AMM overseas missions?

A.  We post this information as it becomes available on this website under "Upcoming Missions."  People interested in current or upcoming volunteer opportunities at AMM's Honolulu Clinic should call the Medical Director, Jerry Allison, M.D. at (808) 841-9845 or email him at jallison@alohamedicalmission.org.

Q. Who selects  the volunteers for the missions?

A. Our Volunteer and Credential Committee reviews and selects prospective applicants in relation to the need of the specific mission(s) and the qualifications of each volunteer.  The same Committee reviews applicants who volunteer to work at our Clinics.

Q.  Can I donate medication or medical supplies and equipment to AMM for use overseas?

A.  We accept donations of unexpired medication, small medical supplies, and equipment from medical professionals, companies, and institutions only. We cannot accept narcotics/controlled substances, medication prescribed to an indvidual, expired meds, or open meds. Also, due to space constraints, we are unable to accept donations of large equipment (exam tables, OR tables, wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches).

Q.  How does AMM fund its activities?

A.  Through a combination of foundation grants, individual and corporate donations.
