How long do missions last?
AMM's missions abroad are typically 10-15 days in length, including travel time.
Does AMM accept local in-country volunteer medical staff on its overseas missions?
Yes. We work together with local doctors and nurses. It is a good way to share expertise and techniques between the two groups as well as for American and other overseas volunteers to get to know colleagues from the host country.
Does AMM make travel arrangements, or must the individual volunteers?
AMM and mission leaders will generally use a certified travel agent to arrange and coordinate flights and hotel accommodations.
How does a mission get started?
Missionsites can be suggested from a variety of sources. Aloha Medical Mission will assess the need and safety of the site. We will then determine whether the necessary support is present from the hospital/clinic facility, the local government, medical community, and the local community sponsors.
How do I apply to volunteer?
Call or e-mail the AMM office. You will be asked to submit a résumé and to complete the appropriate application forms available on this website relevant to your occupation and skill set. You will be put in touch with the appropriate mission leader or local coordinator.
How can I find out about future AMM overseas missions?
Check out our webpage under "Overseas Missions > Where We're Going."
Who selects the volunteers for the missions?
Our Overseas Committee and the mission leaders review and select volunteers dependent on the needs of the specific mission and the qualifications of each volunteer. The Hawai‘i Programs Committee reviews applicants who volunteer to work on our local projects.
Can I donate medication or medical supplies and equipment to AMM for use overseas?
We accept donations of unexpired medications, medical supplies, and equipment from medical professionals, companies, institutions, and individuals. We do not accept narcotics, or opened or expired medications. We do accept donations of small equipment such as wheelchairs, walkers, and crutches. We do accept donations of larger equipment such as dental chairs, anesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, hospital beds, and exam tables when we are able to arrange shipping to facilities abroad.
